The investment is expected to help extend the UKQNtel quantum test network link that is supported by BT.

The second phase of funding will expand the UKQNtel via the UK Research and Innovation’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s (EPSRC) National Dark Fibre Infrastructure Facility to London and Bristol.

In March 2019, BT Group and its partners trumpeted that the new high-speed link, which began construction in mid-2018, was open for testing of new quantum technologies, with the aim of exploring use-cases for Quantum Key Distribution technologies (BTwatch, #297 and #301).
