Telefónica I+D, the Group’s research division, joined with Nokia Spain and 19 other partners in a pledge to design the next generation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to add value to supply chains.

The European Commission’s (EC) ‘Next-Generation IoT sOlutions for the Universal Supply chain’ project — iNGENIOUS, colloquially — aims to utilise artificial intelligence (AI), big data, blockchain, and 5G connectivity to improve supply chain management in three scenarios: industry; logistics; and transport.

The initiative is coordinated by academic institution Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, and supported by Fundación Valenciaport, which will provide facilities for testing solutions at the port of Valencia. It is co‑financed by the EC’s Horizon2020 programme, from which it received approximately €8m.

Work is expected to begin in October 2020 and end in April 2023, focusing on four use‑cases:

  • Enabling the integration of supply chains by addressing interoperability between IoT and blockchain platforms for transport and logistics operations.
  • Developing predictive models based on AI to optimise operations.
  • Remote control of port machinery to improve safety and response times using 5G connectivity.
  • Monitoring goods transport between the port of Valencia and the port of Piraeus using IoT and satellite technology.

Other named partners include Spanish mobile robotics manufacturer ASTI and haptic glove and virtual reality developer Neurodigital.

Telefónica and cohorts continuing on established themes

Telefónica Group has already participated in a swathe of Horizon2020‑backed projects considering the industrialisation of 5G technology (Telefónicawatch, #126, #128, and passim). The Group has also participated in similar industrialisation research projects with automotive manufacturer SEAT, evaluating the role of emerging technologies in a factory setting and the supply chain (Telefónicawatch, #122 and #132). Meanwhile, Nokia and Telefónica’s collaboration on use‑cases for 5G has been developed in Technological Cities projects in Segovia, Spain, and ASTI and Telefónica have worked together at the 5TONIC research centre on automated vehicles in industrial settings (Telefónicawatch, #123, #128, and #136).
