Wayra Hispam added two new companies to its ever-growing startup investment portfolio.

The corporate fund of Telefónica Movistar has invested in two Mexican businesses, Vinco and Retrypay, which join over 100 active startups in the Wayra Hispam portfolio.

Education platform Vinco aims to help companies in Latin America support the education of their employees via a personalised coaching service. The startup is said to host over 1,000 certified programmes, such as master’s degrees and language courses.

Meanwhile, fintech service Retrypay is designed to tackle payment rejection rates. It claims to help e-commerce companies recover up to 60% of sales lost due to rejections of online payment gateways. It also aims to optimise the costs involved in payment processing as a whole.

Wayra Hispam said its commitment to boosting the digital startup ecosystem “is aligned with Telefónica Movistar’s strategy of expanding digitalisation as a model of inclusion”.

The move takes Wayra Hispam’s total number of startup investments in 2021 to five, having taken on three Latin American newcomers as recently as September. Mexican gig economy startup Bankuish raised $1m (€870,000) in a pre‑Seed funding round led by Plug and Play with Wayra Hispam participating. hackU Educacíon also earned a Wayra Hispam investment for its “personalised” education coach platform. The Colombian startup closed a $300,000 investment round in mid‑2021. Wayra Hispam also contributed to a $7m funding round for regional startup WherEX, which provides a digital procurement tool for enterprise clients (Telefónicawatch, #159).
