Telefónica tower business Telxius is cooperating with Orange to supply backhaul connectivity for Dunant, a Google-backed submarine cable connecting Europe and the USA. Under the partnership, Orange will enable the above‑ground, terrestrial connection from the Dunant landing point to Paris, while Telxius will handle the connection from Virginia Beach to Ashburn, just north‑west of Washington DC. Mario Martín, Chief Executive of Telxius, said the deal helped put the unit in an “excellent position in the strategic Europe–US route”. Dunant aims to add to transatlantic data transmission capabilities with 6,600km of cable, surfacing at Saint-Hilaire-de-Riex in France and Virginia Beach. It is expected to go live in late‑2020. The deal adds to a multi-layered relationship between Google and Telefónica, including Telefónica Peru’s recent commitment to use Loon high‑altitude balloons for rural mobile access, and Google’s growing cloud services partnership with Telefónica Business Solutions (Telefónicawatch, #136 and passim).
