While now set to be disrupted by restrictions of movement related to Spain’s response to the coronavirus crisis, in early March 2020 Telefónica España, MediaPro Group, and Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), Barcelona’s metropolitan transport agency, highlighted their collaboration on a 5G and augmented reality (AR) project for tourism. A demonstration of the technology on a tour bus enabled passengers to view immersive and interactive content projected onto vehicle windows and large monuments. Telefónica is providing 5G network technology for the pilot, with particular reference made to the potential for edge computing to provide hyperlocal low‑latency content with a limited drain on end‑user devices. The pilot was developed within the framework of 5GBarcelona, a public–private initiative in the city working on 5G technology that features involvement from Telefónica Group (in 2018 Telefónica and 5GBarcelona inaugurated the ThinXLab to test 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) applications — Telefónicawatch, #130). MediaPro developed the AR software and content and installed the transparent screens, while TMB provided the technology on two of its Barcelona Bus Turístic routes.
