Deutsche Telekom (DT) and partners unveiled a preview version of AR FieldAdvisor, an artificial reality (AR) headset designed to provide remote, hands‑free support to field service engineers. DT has developed the product alongside Qualcomm Technologies, AR developer 6D.ai, and AR headset manufacturer Nreal. While the headset is currently a prototype, the partnership aims to bring AR technology to real‑world use‑cases, in this instance for engineering technicians. AR FieldAdvisor is also to be integrated with the platforms of MobiledgeX, DT’s mobile edge computing spinout. DT has a tie‑up with imaging technology player Konica Minolta that appears to work towards a similar end for manufacturing and engineering use‑cases, while tooz technologies, a joint venture with lens specialist Carl Zeiss, looks to bring AR to various enterprise applications (Deutsche Telekomwatch, #61 and passim). Alex Jin‑Sung Choi, Senior Vice‑President of Strategy and Technology Innovation at DT, said that, “going forward, we will focus on end‑to-end 5G and edge computing integration with MobiledgeX to scale the solution for the enterprise market”.
