BT fell foul of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over videos aired on TV and the BT website in January 2019. The ads related to BT’s home Wi‑Fi services, combining the Complete Wi‑Fi Guarantee, SmartHub, and Wi‑Fi discs, and included the statements that “only BT guarantees Wi‑Fi in every room” and “we guarantee a strong signal in every room”. However, Virgin Media, Vodafone UK, and eleven members of the public complained they were misleading. Three complainants also noted the ads did not make clear that the Wi‑Fi discs needed to be plugged in. The ASA upheld all complaints and told BT not to claim that it guarantees Wi‑Fi in every room unless it has adequate evidence to support the claims.
