Vodafone Idea (VfI) relinquished wireless subscriber leadership status in November 2019, according to the latest figures from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The troubled joint venture (JV) ended the month with 336.3 million wireless customers, against explosively-expanding rival Reliance Jio’s 369.9 million. VfI lost a huge number of users in November (36.4 million), presumably stemming from reaction and response to the operator’s latest legal and financial difficulties (Vodafonewatch, #181 and see separate report). The JV has now haemorrhaged well over 100 million customers since its formation in August 2018. VfI’s woes and Jio’s spectacular rate of customer acquisition has already seen VfI lose leadership in Kolkata, one of India’s three major Metro licensing circles (Vodafonewatch, #177). VfI is just hanging on to the top spot in Delhi and Mumbai.
