Telefónica Deutschland (O2 Germany) officially opened its 5G campus network in Berlin and invited all and sundry to go along and experience 5G services (COVID‑19 measures allowing). Network partner Nokia is providing a small‑cell‑based indoor network for the project, which is located at the operator’s existing BASECAMP venue (Telefónicawatch, #139). The aim of the campus is to showcase 5G devices and services, including: a fixed‑wireless access service and virtual reality (VR) applications from Nokia; smart-benches from Strawberry Energy; and 3D environments from Dimenco. In addition, two Wayra‑backed startups — BraveYourself and foldAI — are showcasing their solutions. The former is developing networks of intelligent sensors to monitor forests, while the latter specialises in VR. The operator also reiterated its intention to start building 5G networks in Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich during 2020. O2 Germany currently plans to use equipment from Huawei Technologies and Nokia in the 5G radio access network (Telefónicawatch, #140).
