- Financing now available for Telefónica–Repsol solar JV customers; Telefónica wins a pair of regional public sector contracts.
- Telefónica España was reportedly awarded a €26.7m contract by the Junta de Andalucía for the deployment of an indoor Wi‑Fi network for the regional government’s buildings, scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. Vodafone Spain and IT solutions provider Innovasur jointly won the contract’s other lot for €31.4m.
- Telefónica España deployed a temporary 5G standalone (5G SA) network to enable three drones to follow the Sail Grand Prix (SailGP) event between Andalucía and Cádiz in October 2022, utilising network slicing technology and 3.5GHz antennae from Nokia. The DJI‑produced drones were installed with encoding units from video transmission specialist AVIWEST to enable images to be sent to cloud TV production software monitored by drone consultants GesDon, in a building provided by the University of Cádiz.
- Telefónica España was reportedly awarded a €10.38m contract by Catalonia’s Department of Education for the supply of 27,524 Windows and 3,068 Linux laptops to educational centres. Digital solutions provider Seidor won the remaining lot in the contract, for the provision of 24,379 Chrome OS laptops for €6.66m — beating Telefónica in the process, which was not allowed to be awarded both lots under the rules of the tender, despite its higher score — as well as competition from Vodafone Spain and a consortium featuring Ingram Micro and Orange Spain.
- Movistar Empresas reportedly agreed a contract with Cotrasur to provide the regional cargo transport association with 571 telephone lines. The new deal was said to build upon a 15‑year relationship between the two.
- Telefónica España was reported to have suffered a cyber‑attack in late‑October 2022, although the operating business (OB) claimed the personal data of its subscribers had not been compromised. The breach evidently enabled the perpetrators to steal the operator’s customers’ router configuration data.
- Spanish lender Banco Sabadell tied with Solar360, Telefónica and Repsol’s clean‑tech joint venture (JV), to offer customers financing for their photovoltaic panel installations. The move will enable Solar360 to offer loans to business and residential customers, as well as communities of solar panel owners. Telefónica established the JV with Spanish multinational energy firm Repsol earlier in 2022 (Telefónicawatch, #164).
- Telefónica España extended 5G services to its O2 España customers, along with a 48‑month leasing scheme for 5G devices from Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi. O2 customers’ throttled mobile data speeds were also increased, from 64Kbps to 128Kbps, after they exhaust their inclusive data allowances. The OB highlighted that its 5G network now covers 83% of the population. The moves shortly follow the completion of the migration of users from in‑house mobile virtual operator Tuenti to O2, as Telefónica looks to streamline its multi‑brand strategy (Telefónicawatch, #168).
